Getting a Library Card

How do I get a library card? To get a library card, you must come to the library and present a photo ID, and one thing with your name and current mailing address. Possible items include a piece of mail, a check, voter registration card, or hunting and fishing license. If the membership is for a child under the age of 18, the parent or guardian will need to present these items to sign up the child.

Who is able to get a library card? Anyone may get a library card. Cards are free for anyone living in the city limits of Farmington, students attending a Farmington school, or individuals aged 60 or older. Anyone outside the city limits of Farmington can get a card for $15 per year, per household. In order to be in compliance with rules set forth by the Secretary of State of Missouri for the library to be eligible for state aid, parents or legal guardians are the only people who can sign up a minor for a library card, without exception.

What is my user ID and my PIN? Your user ID is your library card number which is located right underneath the barcode. Your PIN is just your last name, all lowercase letters.

Can I still get a card if I don’t live in St. Francois County? Yes, non-county residents can still get a library card. It just costs $15 for the entire household. Patrons who are 60 or older may get a free card no matter where they reside. A library card may only be acquired in person, when you physically present your photo ID.

Checking out Material

How long do I get to keep materials? Everything is checked out for 3 weeks, except the DVDs and board games, which are 1 week.

How many items may I check out at one time? You are limited to 5 items total at your very first check out after receiving a library card. After that, you may check out up to 10 items. However, there may only be 5 DVDs checked out per household.

Do you offer e-books? Yes, the Farmington Public Library participates in the Missouri Libraries to Go program, that allows patrons to check out up to 7 e-books and/or audiobooks, in addition to their physical materials from the library. Patrons may go to molib2go.org and login using their card number as their ID, and their last name all lowercase as their PIN or password.

How can I renew my items? Items may be renewed twice by phone or from our OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) for an additional 3 weeks each renewal. Items that are on reserve for another patron cannot be renewed.

What if the library doesn’t have an item I’m looking for? If we do not have a certain item you are wanting, we may be able to see if we can borrow it from another library through our Inter Library Loan (ILL) service. To request an item, you must fill out the form at the library. You can request up to five items per week, and can only have five ILL items checked out at one time.
