The roar of engines breaks the stillness of the Old Lead Belt at St. Joe State Park, one of two off-road vehicle parks in the state park system. The many trails set aside for off-road vehicle use make the park the premiere off-road vehicle area. Off-road vehicle (ORV) riders can zoom across 2,000 acres; one of the largest ORV areas in the Midwest. Camping, equestrian camping, lakes for fishing and swimming, picnicking and hiking, equestrian and bicycle trails, and a radio-controlled airplane field are features. ORV permits are required to ride in the ORV area.
The park also features four lakes, two swimming beaches, equestrian trails, a hiking and bicycling trail and picnic sites, as well as two campgrounds capable of accommodating campers with ORV or horse trailers. This park offers two nicely shaded campgrounds, one of which is an equestrian campground. Campsites are equipped with a picnic table, fire pit and lantern post. Showers, firewood, a dump station and laundry are available. In the old Lead Belt, Missouri’s third-largest state park offers picnicking, lakes, fishing, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, a bicycle trail, equestrian trails and a 2,000-acre area for off-road vehicles.
