
Farmington HistorySt. Francois county was created December 19, 1821 and it's county seat and largest city is Farmington, Missouri. Farmington was established in 1822 after it's agricultural history and was previously known as Murphy's Settlement for William Murphy of Kentucky who first visited the site in 1798. When St. Francois County was organized, the town was briefly called St. Francois Court House and then renamed to Farmington. Timeline

David Murphy donated 52 acres of land for the establishment of the county seat of St. Francois County.
1825
The name Farmington selected for the town.
1836
Farmington incorporated (75 votes were cast, 74 for and 1 against).
Alvin Rucker was the first Mayor, and Charley Hart was the first Sheriff.
1870
About 1870 the first public school was built.
1879 Farmington achieved fourth-class city status.

The first automobile was owned by Judge William R. Taylor in 1900. His home was where the Post Office is now.
St. Francois Electric Railway Co. opened a trunk railroad line to Farmington.
Farmington became a third-class city.
