The Farmington Fire Department provides Fire Suppression, Basic Life Support, Fire Safety Inspections, Pre-Incident Planning, Fire Prevention Programs, and other services to approximately 15,000 residents within an area of approximately nine square miles. The department currently has an ISO rating of “4”.

There are a total of eleven full-time professional firefighters including a Fire Chief, an Assistant Fire Chief, Captains, a Lieutenant, Firefighters, and 27 part-time firefighting professionals.

The department responded to 1,785 calls in the year 2004. In 2005, the number of emergency calls increased by 13%, totaling 2,018 for the year.

Fire Prevention Bureau

General

Fire Prevention is the most effective means for reducing the loss of life and property. The Farmington Fire Commercial FireDepartment’s Fire Prevention Bureau provides public education, annual fire safety inspections, and fire investigations. This office also enforces the city's fire code with regards to certain new construction. Description of Bureau ServicesPublic education programs are provided to share valuable safety information and materials with the public. Annual fire safety inspections are conducted to ensure compliance with basic life safety requirements. Fire investigations are conducted to determine fire causes and origins, and to learn how future fires might be prevented. Permits, inspection, and plan review ensures buildings comply with the city's fire codesFire Prevention Permits

A Fire Prevention Permit is required for fire protection systems, construction, or operations as specified by the fire code.To apply for a fire prevention permit the applicant must:1. Complete a fire prevention application.2. Provide at least two copies of the required plans.3. The Farmington Fire Department strives to ensure safety in the community whether you are at home or in the workplace. Early fire suppression is a key factor. There are many different types and uses of portable fire extinguishers.

Fire Extinguisher Tips Portable fire extinguishers should be provided in homes and businesses.

1. Fire extinguishers are recommended on every level of the home.

2. Locate fire extinguisher in a safe, visible, and accessible place.

3. Check the fire extinguisher monthly at a minimum. (However, when having a required portable fire extinguisher in a local business other steps may be needed to meet code compliance. Check with the Farmington Fire Department for details).

4. Be familiar with basic use of the portable fire extinguisher (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).

The Farmington Fire Department encourages training in the proper use of portable fire extinguishers for businesses and residents.
